North Penn High School (NPHS) has been selected to perform Disney’s Frozen: The Broadway Musical as part of a nationwide competition among U.S. high schools for the rights to perform the show at the high school level for the first time. The competition, The United States of Frozen, Love is an Open Door, selected one high school from each U.S. state and territory to receive the exclusive rights to the show. NPHS was selected out of 300 high school applicants to perform the first and only production of Disney’s Frozen in a high school in Pennsylvania.

The United States of Frozen, Love is an Open Door, asked high school theatre programs to demonstrate how they would use their production of Frozen to strengthen their school community, provide outreach to underserved groups, and support inclusive and diverse theatre programs. The competition was hosted by the Educational Theatre Association, Disney Theatrical Group, and Music Theatre International.

“We are incredibly excited to be granted the rights to perform Frozen for the first time in a Pennsylvania high school,” said Andrea Roney, NPHS theatre director. “This is an amazing opportunity for North Penn High School and for the dedicated students who work hard each year to put on wonderful productions for the community to enjoy.”

Based on the 2013 animated feature film, Disney’s stage adaptation of Frozen opened on Broadway in March 2018. Music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, book written by Jennifer Lee, it tells the story of two sisters and princesses, Anna and Elsa. Elsa has magical powers to freeze objects, and she loses control of these powers when she suddenly inherits the throne. Anna has to save her sister and the kingdom from eternal winter. This is the first time the full-length stage adaptation of Frozen is available for high school students to perform.
