Autism Acceptance Month

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and nonverbal communication.

Five Fascinating Facts:

  1. Autism spectrum disorder now affects 1 in 36 children. Boys are nearly 4 times more likely than girls to be diagnosed with ASD.
  2. The term stems from the Greek word "autos" meaning "self", so the literal meaning of autism is "alone".
  3. Individuals with autism spectrum disorder have communication deficits. It is important to distinguish between spoken language and social communication deficits.
  4. Individuals with ASD may be very creative and find a passion and talent for music, theater, art, dance, and singing quite easily.
  5. ASD is a spectrum disorder, which means that every child with ASD has different skills, challenges, and needs.
