NP Invites Community to Examine Growing Up in the Digital Age through Screening of Documentary, Screenagers

The North Penn High School (NPHS) Guidance Department invites parents and guardians in the North Penn School District (NPSD) to join in the conversation of growing up in thedigital age at their free showing of the documentarySCREENAGERSon the rescheduled date ofMonday, March 11 at 7:00 pm in the NPHS Audion.

Kids today are scrolling through life, with rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span. Physician and award-winning filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time- friction she knew all too well.

InSCREENAGERS, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists and brain scientists,SCREENAGERSreveals how tech time impacts kids' development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.

Electronic devices can be powerful tools for learning, as evidenced by NPSD's one-to-one Chromebook initiative; however, cell phone use in class is a major distraction to classroom teachers. Led by NPHS Guidance Counselor Sam Feeney through a grant funded by the NPSD Educational Foundation,SCREENAGERSwill be shown to all NPHS students during the school day. The goal is to further students' education on proper technology usage within the classroom. The evening screening on February20 will give parents, guardians and community members the opportunity to view the film. Students may also attend but must be supervised by a parent or guardian.
